EU hauliers may also hire commercial vehicles to exercise their professional activities. Directive 2006/1/EC lays down provisions for the use of hired commercial vehicles for professional traffic between Member States.
These measures have been designed to optimise the allocation of resources and to bring flexibility to the organisation of transport. The conditions to hire a commercial vehicle are as follows:
- The vehicle must be registered in compliance with the laws in the Member State where the haulier is established;
- It is allowed to hire only a vehicle. Driving or accompanying personnel may not be covered by the contract
- The vehicle should be at the sole disposal of the haulier who signed the contract
- The vehicle must be driven by the haulier’s personnel only.
Documents proving compliance with the conditions must be on board of the vehicle.
