Working times

The organization of working time is covered by the Directive 2003/88/EC. It contains clear rules on the periods of daily and weekly rest, breaks, annual leave, night and shift work. It covers all types of workers in the EU with special provisions made for mobile workers (drivers), offshore worker and workers on board of fishing vessels.

Member States are obliged to ensure that every mobile worker is entitled to:

  • maximum weekly working time of 48 hours, including overtime;
  • paid annual leave of at least four weeks.

The duration of a working day and regular breaks is regulated by the Drivers Hours Rules.
