Under the supervision of the Ministry of Economy and Transport, the National Transport Authority, as a central authority, co-ordinates, controls and supervises the activity of the county transport inspectorates.

The National Transport Authority specifies the technical requirements and methods of inspections and supervisions used in official procedures, the test requirements and schedule of driver training. The organization also participates in preparatory legislative work and collects statistical records. The National Transport Authority performs its activities in several transport related areas namely road transport, railways, shipping, aviation, education and testing of drivers.

In the field of road transport periodical technical inspections of vehicles; endorsement of assembly, transformation (type approval) and putting into service of vehicles; strengthening of road safety with controls at the roadside and premises (driver’s hours, dangerous goods, roadworthiness and environmental, axle weight); consistent and strict supervision of repair companies and workshops performing vehicle examinations; trial tests to further develop inspection technology; authorization and supervision of road transport licenses constitute the main activities of the authority.

Tasks related to the road network includes the authorization of the design, construction, maintenance and decommissioning of roads; designation of pedestrian/railway passages; imposing and lifting road closures or traffic restrictions; assignment of routes i.e. for vehicles transporting dangerous goods, oversized cargo.
